Govt calls off big BF battle

Govt calls off match between Highlanders and Dynamos

Government, through the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), has ordered postponement of the big Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash pitting two of the country's biggest clubs Highlanders and Dynamos which was scheduled for Bulawayo this weekend.

It was the biggest clash of the week five fixtures and now the two giants are now expected to face-off in the televised Independence Cup duel at Pfura Stadium in Mount Darwin, Mashonaland Central province where Zimbabwe’s 43rd Independence celebrations are taking place on April 18.

Bosso and DeMbare have been enjoying a dream start to the premier league season with both teams currently in top four on the log standings.

Dynamos missed an opportunity to lead the pack after playing out a goalless draw with army side Cranborne Bullets on Monday and now sit third with eight points from four matches.

They have the same number of points with fourth-placed Highlanders, but boast of a superior goal difference.

The PSL announced the postponement of the fixture yesterday.

“Please be advised that the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Highlanders FC and Dynamos FC scheduled to be played on Saturday 15 April 2023 has been postponed.

“This comes following a directive from the Sports and Recreation Commission for the teams to participate in the Independence day activities which will commence on April 16, 2023

“The postponed fixture will be rescheduled in due course,” PSL spokesperson Kudzai Bare said in a statement.

This is the first time since time immemorial that the Independence celebrations are being held outside Bulawayo and Harare.

According to the programme, the district will host the children’s party at Pfura Stadium on April 17, while the main Independence celebrations are scheduled for Mt Darwin High School on April 18.

Highlanders won the Independence trophy last year after beating Dynamos 1-0 in Bulawayo last year.

In 2021, Dynamos triumphed 2-0 against the same opponents in a clash that marked the return of domestic football in the country after a year’s hiatus due the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, eight matches will go ahead as planned this weekend with focus on the top of the table clash between log leaders Caps United and defending champions FC Platinum, who are currently second on the standings, taking place at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.
