Council workers, officials clash

The Kadoma City Council has been accused of stifling the rights of workers and ignoring the input of the workers’ committee.

The Kadoma City Council has been accused of stifling the rights of workers and ignoring the input of the workers’ committee.

The accusations are contained in a letter to town clerk Malvern Madondo and mayor Nigel Ruzario dated January 2 where members of the workers' committee said they resigned enmasse due to threats by management.

The letter was also copied to the Zimbabwe Urban Council Workers' Union and Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Union.

“We took office at the end of 2022, but only started performing our duties in February 2023 as management maintained that we were raw and untrained to engage in the works council,” reads part of the letter.

“The whole year was characterised by sour labour relations, with management engaging on continuous onslaught on any worker issue raised by the committee, as management unilateralism and bullying antics reared their ugly head once again.”
