THE less privileged in Rusape got an early Christmas boost after receiving groceries and other basics from the town council.

The town council recently held a fundraising event with a bias towards ensuring that the less privileged also enjoy the festive season.

Musicians Alick Macheso and Jah Prayzah were in Rusape for a musical show with a certain percentage of their takings given to the council Christmas Cheer Fund.

In an interview yesterday, council chairperson Lovemore Chifomboti said a handover ceremony of donated goods to the less privileged was held at Makoni Old People’s Home on Saturday.

He also said they raised school fees for orphans at St Joseph Primary School and Roman Catholic Secondary School.

“I am happy with the support of the business community in Rusape and other well-wishers who made some donations in both cash and kind for this year’s Chairman’s Cheer Fund,” he said

“We have also adopted a 9 months old baby whose parent perished in a car accident in Beitbridge and is now in Rusape in Mabvazuva.”

Chifomboti said they visited the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services in Rusape where they noticed that they had challenges preparing food for the inmates due to shortages of utensils.

He said they had since donated cooking utensils to the correctional services.

Disabled persons from the community were given food hampers while Ngonidzashe Children’s Home received a four plate stove, groceries and blankets for its new home in Mabvazuva.

Makoni Old People’s Home was  given a new 43 inch television set and groceries.

Chifomboti said donations were still coming.

Concerned Rusape Residents Trust chairperson Godfrey Mufuranhewe, said he was happy with his community.

“The Rusape community has shown us that we can work together to bring smiles to the less privileged in society,” he said.

Chifomboti is a Citizens Coalitions for Change councillor in Rusape.
