Man nabbed over $297m drugs

A HARARE man, Davidson Gomo appeared in court yesterday charged with possession of dangerous drugs valued $297 130 000 at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

Gomo (27) appeared before magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti-Guwuriro and was remanded in custody to April 27.

Allegations are that on Monday, police received information that Gomo had presented a suspicious parcel for shipment to Manila, Phillipines, prompting detectives to investigate..

The detectives met the informant Yusuf Tariki at the airport who then presented the parcel containing 23 metal pulleys which were packed in three cardboard boxes.

It is alleged that the detectives then took one of the pulleys which they opened using a grinder and discovered that it contained sachets of methamphetamine, commonly known as ecstasy, which is widely abused as a recreational drug due to its unique psychological effects.

The detectives seized all the metal pulleys and took them to ZRP Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport base where preliminary tests were conducted and the contents tested positive to methamphetamine.

Investigations were carried out and the accused was arrested at his house on March 28.

On the same day, the other 22 metal pulleys were opened using a grinder in the accused’s presence.

It was discovered that 21 metal pulleys contained approximately 20,713 kilogrammes of methamphetamine while one contained 1kg of cocaine. 

They had a combined street value of $297 130 000.
