Goat scheme a game changer: Minister

Richard Moyo

MATABELELAND North Provincial Affairs minister Richard Moyo yesterday said the presidential goat scheme will help build resilience in rural communities in the face of climate change.

Moyo made the remarks during the launch of the presidential goat scheme and agricultural inputs distribution in Umguza yesterday.

“Today you are witnessing the delivery of the first batch of 300 goats as part of the targeted 1 000 goats for Umguza district. 300 beneficiaries will receive the goats for now and it is expected that each household will grow its herd from the given animal supplied by the presidential scheme through good management and discipline,’’ Moyo said.

Moyo also launched the Pfumvudza/Intwasa presidential inputs scheme in the district before urging farmers to heed advice from agricultural experts for better yields.

“Meteorologists have forecasted a normal to above normal rainfall season, I therefore implore all farmers to attend pre-planting meetings and demonstrations,’’ Moyo said.

He assured farmers that the Department of Migrant Pest Control and Biosafety was ready to contain quelea bird outbreaks.
