The peaceful agricultural community in Grasslands plots, Kwekwe, was recently engulfed in a violent political storm that resulted in the forced eviction of Ocean Mzizi and his family.
This event has brought to light the complexities and dangers faced by individuals who find themselves at the intersection of politics and land ownership.
Ocean Mzizi was called upon to manage the farm on behalf of his brother, Fiso Mzizi, a ZANU-PF member who had benefitted from the land reform program in 2006. Fiso, who lives with a disability after losing one leg, required assistance in operating the farm effectively, leading to Ocean's involvement despite his opposition political affiliation.
The situation became increasingly complicated as Ocean Mzizi, a known supporter of the opposition, faced targeted attacks alongside his wife, Chipo Machanyu. Misconceptions arose within the community, with some accusing Ocean of using the farm to campaign against ZANU-PF, despite the fact that the party had granted the Mzizi family the plot.
Tensions reached a boiling point when Ocean Mzizi was spotted at a rally in Mbizo, Kwekwe, addressed by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa in preparation for the March 26 by-elections. Tragically, the rally was invaded by ZANU-PF supporters, resulting in the death of CCC supporter Mboneni Ncube. The escalation of violence spread fear and anxiety throughout the community.

A neighboring plot owner, speaking under condition of anonymity, disclosed the aftermath of Ocean's appearance at the rally.
"After Ocean showed his support for the opposition at the rally, ZANU-PF members held a meeting in Grasslands where it was decided that the Mzizi family should be ejected from the area." This decision marked the beginning of a series of attacks targeting the Mzizi plot, leading Ocean and his wife to fear for their safety and go into hiding.
The events at Grasslands reflect the dangerous intertwining of politics and land ownership, with individuals like Ocean Mzizi and his family caught in the crossfire of political rivalries. Their forced eviction serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability faced by those perceived to be aligned with opposing political affiliations.
As a cloud of fear hovers over the community, there is an urgent need for local and national authorities to address the escalating tensions and ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their political beliefs. The Mzizi family's plight underscores the critical importance of protecting the rights and well-being of individuals amidst political divisions.
Efforts to reach out to ZANU-PF officials for comments on the situation were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. The community eagerly awaits resolution and justice for the Mzizi family while calling for an end to the violence and intimidation that has cast a shadow over Grasslands plots in Kwekwe.
