The spotlight will today fall on young Sevens rugby players from around the country’s schools system when they converge at St John’s College for the Spar Interprovincial Under-16 and Under-19 Rugby Sevens tourney.

The one-day tourney, which is being used to select national representative Under-16 and Under-19 teams, will feature teams from Masvingo, Mashonaland East and West, Bulawayo, Matabeleland South and hosts Harare. The teams will clash in the round-robin phase where they were divided into two groups of four teams in each group.

In the Under-19 category, Pool A comprises of Harare North, Harare West, Matabeleland South and Bulawayo, while Masvingo, Harare South, Mashonaland West and Harare East will battle it out in Pool B.

In the Under-16 category, Pool A comprises of Harare South, East and West and Mashonaland West, while Pool B has only three teams form Harare North, Masvingo and Bulawayo.

Harare West and East get the programme underway in the Under-16 at 9am at Honey Field, before Bulawayo and Matabeleland South clash in the Under-19 category, 15 minutes later.

Meanwhile, young rugby players from St John’s College got a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity of rubbing shoulders with their role models following a visit by three South African rugby legends Percy Montgomery, Charl Marais, Pieter Muller and A J Venter on Saturday.

“We had a visit from four ex-Springbok Rugby players who ran a coaching clinic for our boys on Saturday. The boys had an exciting opportunity to meet Percy Montgomery, Charl Marais, Pieter Muller and A J Venter,” said the schools’ sports director Atherston Squire.

This was the second visit by Springboks legends to Zimbabwe in less than six months following a similar visit by Schalk Burger (Sr), (father to current Springboks star Schalk Burger), Muller, Marais, Carel du Plessis, Rob Louw, Danie Gerber, Ray Mordt and Venter.
