Globally acclaimed Sungura music icon Alick Macheso is set to headline the Hippo Valley Estates 70th Tadzika Midzi Anniversary Gala, scheduled for May 30 at Chishamiso Stadium in Chiredzi.
The gala, a landmark celebration of the estate’s seven decades of growth and community impact, promises to unite Chiredzi communities in music, culture and festivity.
Tadzika Midzi is Shona for “Our Roots Have Gone Deeper” –meaning that from 1956 to 2026, the Hippo Valley Estates, which have the Tongaat and Huletts Sugar Brands is getting stronger with age.
The announcement follows the signing of a performance agreement between Macheso and Hippo Valley Estates’ head of corporate and industry affairs Dahlia Garwe at the estate’s Harare offices.
“This partnership represents a fusion of corporate heritage, culture, music, and community values that are deeply important to us,” Garwe said.
She said Macheso’s participation will enrich the gala experience for stakeholders, employees and the wider community.

She noted the vital role of media in documenting milestones, preserving history, and engaging communities, adding that Macheso’s music, spanning generations, mirrors the enduring spirit of Hippo Valley Estates.
Macheso, accompanied by his manager Tich Makahamadze, expressed excitement for the celebration.
“Let’s take the Hippo Valley Estates 70th Tadzika Midzi Anniversary Gala as an important celebration and come together. We are in the process of making a new album and promise lots of surprises,” he said, recalling his early performances in Chiredzi back in 1984.
Macheso credited local communities for his growth, noting that his career began as a bassist for the Khiama Boys while the urban Harare circuit was dominated by yesteryear legends such as Safirio Madzikatire, Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo, and The Four Brothers.
In addition to musical performances, the gala will feature community sports activities supported through Hippo Valley Estates’ CSR initiatives, including tag of war, netball, football, basketball, and volleyball.
An awards ceremony will honour winning teams, reflecting the estate’s commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles among local youth.
Meanwhile, Garwe also confirmed plans for ongoing contributions to national development, highlighting continuity in sugar production and distribution, as well as an Amateur and Professional Golf Tournament from June 25 to 28 at the Triangle and Hippo Valley Golf Courses.
The 70th Tadzika Midzi Anniversary Gala will not only commemorate seven decades of Hippo Valley Estates’ success but also celebrate nourishment and prosperity supported by Tongaat Sugar, fostering unity across the Chiredzi communities.
