NOTHING surpasses motherly love in life, and it was a befitting gesture for Zimbabwe Cricket to dispatch the senior women’s team for a day out in the community to the Highfield-based Chinyaradzo Children’s Home for a let-the-children-play interaction last weekend.
The day started with a ball-game engagement at Takashinga Cricket Club where cricket enthusiasts from Chinyaradzo were taken through some cricket orientation.
From cricket, it went a gear up into a whole lot of fun games; kids shared the same coach with the Lady Chevrons on their return to Chinyaradzo ending with the handover of groceries at the home.
Lady Chevrons’ captain, Mary-Anne Musonda, who led her charges to Highfield on their rest day in between the recently ended practice games against the South Africa Emerging side, said she hoped that they were able to put a smile on the faces of the kids during their interactions.
“For us this is something we hold dearly. We have mothers in the team, we have people who have children in the team and coming to spend time with other children is very special to us. We also understand where they are as children who are orphaned as well, they also need that extra care, extra attention and we are hoping that we managed to put a smile on that face just giving them extra attention, playing games with them, engaging them, and encouraging them,” Musonda told The Sports Hub
“Talking about life and just helping them in their confidence with all these small aspects of life impact them in the broader scheme of things. We are happy about this. We are hoping that we will continue to do this. We actually saw a couple of kids who have potential to play cricket and you never know where life will take them.
“With a lot of drug and substance abuse out there, teenage pregnancy, cricket can also be an avenue to actually reduce all those incidences so we are actually hoping that we will engage a lot more to give them better future if we can,” she said
ZC head of human resources, Joyce Kwashira said they were in for a ‘Test’ kind of relationship with Chinyaradzo and not ‘T10’.

“ZC is very excited to have started this relationship with Chinyaradzo Children’s Home as our charity of choice among others. It’s part of our duty as ZC to serve the community as well,” she said.
“This is only the beginning of bigger things that we intend to do with Chinyaradzo and other charities that we will adopt as we go along. We are grateful for this opportunity. We are looking forward to getting so many cricketers from Chinyaradzo, we want our kids to understand that they can achieve whatever heights they want regardless of background.”
Vernia Mudhara, Chinyaradzo Children’s Home matron expressed gratitude for the visit, interaction, and the donation.
“Thank you for remembering us. Here we have vulnerable children from various backgrounds. This is their home; they go to schools outside in the community and come back home. We take care of all their needs from school fees, uniforms, food, medical etc but our major challenge is that we don’t have any income generating projects to take care of these kids,” Mudhara said.
“Their daily routine is that they go to school and return to their home here, but since you have adopted us as your charity of choice, we are going to look at the kids who are interested in playing cricket and we make arrangements for you to help our kids realise their dream. Not everyone is academically gifted, some will make it in life through sport and many of you have done it in life through cricket,” she said.
