Gwanda villagers fear that medicines stored at two health centres will be affected by lack of electricity after a thief stole solar batteries.

Zenzo Benon Moyo (36) was recently arrested for stealing nine batteries worth US$14 000 from Stanmore and Fumugwe clinics.

Ward 4 councillor Lobukhosi Malila said different drugs and Covid-19 vaccines were stored at the clinics.

“Following the theft, people are no longer sure if the drugs are still safe for their use considering that some needed to be stored in refrigerators,” Malila said.

“We are glad that the batteries were recovered and are now back at the clinics.

“They are now waiting for their re-installation.”

However, acting Gwanda district medical officer, Blessed Gwarimbo allayed fears that the drugs were affected by lack of power as there was a backup system.
