AFRO-POP singer Thamsanqa “Tammy” Moyo has described her debut nomination for the forthcoming All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) 2022 as a life-changing moment in her career.

Tammy, through her song Sare, has been nominated for the Best Female Artiste in southern Africa.

In this category, she will battle for honours against top African household names such as Ndivhunzannyi “Makhadzi” Ralivhona, and South Africa-based Zimbabwean singers ShaSha and Nadia Nakai, among others.

The Kwandinobva hitmaker said the nomination came as a surprise, adding that she hoped it would pave way for her peers in the industry.

“It is an exciting feeling and I am happy to be nominated for the awards. I am looking to the future and expecting to break the glass ceiling in the region and the world. This means I am paving the way for my peers in the music industry and the nomination shows that people are appreciating my music,” she noted.

“I want to give my fans the best and also hope, and something to look forward to in the future. This is a huge platform (Afrima) and being nominated among the best in southern Africa shows that my hard work is now paying off.”

Also nominated for Afrima was dancehall president Winky D and Nutty O.

Winky D, born Wallace Chirumiko, was nominated in two categories, Best Male Artiste in southern Africa and Best Artiste in African Reggae-Dancehall together with Nutty O.

Nutty O’s song Handipere Power was selected alongside Winky D’s Happy Again in the African Reggae-Dancehall category.

The Gaffa president, as Winky D is also known to his legion of fans, was once again nominated for the Best Male Artiste in southern Africa for his song Happy Again.

Winky D will battle for honours against South African Dj and record producer Kabza De small and Master KG, among other African stars.

According to the international executive committee of the Afrima awards, 9 067 entries were submitted for this year’s edition of the awards becoming the highest number ever recorded by the awards since their inception.

The Afrima jury selected a total of 382 nominations across 39 categories to represent all five regions in Africa, as well as the diaspora.

Only entries submitted within the period from August 20, 2021 to August 5, 2022, were considered for nomination.

Leading the nominations list on a regional basis this year is west Africa with 134 nominations, representing 35%, while east Africa follows closely with 69 nominations, which is about 18%.

The southern Africa region is close by with 68 nominations, which amounts to 17,8% with central Africa pulling its weight with 52 nominations, representing 13,6%. North Africa is the last with 49 nominations, a 12,8% representation.
