Mutare army side Buffaloes are one foot into the Premier Soccer League after posting a 2-0 away win over Mwenezana to open a 10-point lead at the top of the Eastern Region Division One football league on Sunday.
An unexpected slip-up by second-placed Hippo Valley, who lost 2-0 at lowly-placed Gaza Gunners in Chipinge, further dampened their chances of bringing top-flight football to Chiredzi.
With eight games before the curtain comes down, the soldiers are yet to taste defeat, having amassed 56 points in 20 matches, collecting maximum points in 18 matches and two draws.
The soldiers have put themselves in the driving seat as they have five remaining home matches and three away, most of them with lowly-placed outfits.
Hippo Valley have 46 points from the same number of games and are the only team keeping Buffaloes on their toes in the entire campaign with the rest of the teams adding up numbers.
Buffaloes got their goals through a brace by defensive midfielder Prosper Matambanadzo. However, Buffaloes assistant coach Sicho Masachi is not celebrating yet.

“It’s too early to talk about gaining promotion. You never know with football. But l am very hopeful that my team will continue to collect maximum points until the last day of the season. With the commitment shown by the players nothing is impossible,” he said.
