The Zimbabwe Under-18 Sevens rugby team won two of their four pool matches on the first day of the inaugural Atlantic Provincial Under-18 Sevens tournament at the Konka Stadium near Rustenburg in the North West Province in South Africa on Thursday.

Zimbabwe, who are being coached by former Sables player Andy Ferreira, managed two wins against Leopards (40-14) and Griqualand (19-10), before going down against Blue Bulls (24-19) and Border (24-19).

According to reports from South Africa in both defeats, Zimbabwe raced to a 19-0 lead at half-time before running out of steam in the second half.

Ultimately this cost them a place in the Cup quarter-finals, but despite being relegated to the second-tier competition, the Plate quarter-final, the young lads still gave a good account of themselves after easily dispatching rivals Namibia 26-7 yesterday.

Zimbabwe were set to play the Sharks later yesterday with a place in the Plate final still beckoning.
