Local golf fans will have to wait a bit longer to watch action following the postponement of the 2012 Golden Pilsener Zambezi Golf Tour opener.

This follows the postponement of the season-opening tournament, the Mashwede Falcon Open, which was expected to tee-off at Falcon Golf Club tomorrow. Organisers said parts of the Falcon golf course were waterlogged.

With no tournaments scheduled for the Sunshine Tour in South Africa this weekend, the 36-hole tournament, which has a prize fund of $10 000 courtesy of Mashwede Diesel Services, was expected to attract a star-studded field.

The Zambezi Tour tournament co-ordinator and founding trustee, Mike Mahachi, told NewsDay Sport yesterday that a new date would be set for the tournament.

I can confirm that the Mashwede Falcon Open, which was supposed to be the first tournament on the Zambezi Tour, has been postponed and new dates will be announced soon.

We held an inspection of Falcon Golf Club early this week and some areas of the golf course including the bunkers were still flooded due to the heavy rains that have been prevailing recently.

The tournament is, however, still on as the hosting club and the sponsor agreed to reschedule the tournament to a later date which should be announced soon, said Mahachi.

Zvishavane-born Ignatius Mketekete will be the man most local pros would want to beat following his impressive run last season which saw him comfortably top the money-list.

Other seasoned campaigners like Tongo Charamba, who had a poor season last year by his standards, Philip Tshuma and Robson Saurombe would also want to do better this season.

According to the 2012 Golden Pilsener Zambezi Tour calendar released yesterday, soon after the Mashwede Falcon Open, local golfers will turn their attention to the flagship R1 500 000 Africom Zimbabwe Open.
