Former Warriors and Highlanders midfielder Honour Gombami has signed a two-year deal with Belgian Second Division football side, Antwerp.
Gombami was turning out for Belgian top-flight league club Cercle Brugge, but the club did not renew his contract which ended on June 30 saying it would be a risk due to injury concerns.
The illustrious midfielder, who was a darling of Highlanders fans, suffered a career-threatening injury when he tore his meniscus and back cartilage on the right knee in an away match against KER Genk on November 2, 2009.
With many saying that he would never play again, Gombami refused to give up and went through a rehabilitation process which eventually saw him play a few games towards the end of last season.
Gombami confirmed his move to Antwerp in a telephone interview from his Belgium base with NewsDay Sport yesterday.
“I signed a two-year deal with Antwerp,” he said. “I am happy with the move. Antwerp is a big team and has a huge support base because they are a former Premiership club.

“It was going to be tough for me to get a team in the First Division because I had stayed long without playing due to the injury, that is why I have moved to the Second Division.”
Gombami said he was still optimistic that he would fully recover from the career-threatening injury.
“I am training and playing friendly matches because our season is starting on August 22,” he said. “I feel pain when I play, but the pain will eventually disappear because I am still on the road to full recovery. I want to play more games because that is the only way I can go back to my level of play.”
He played three competitive games for Cercle Brugge last year.
