JUST weeks after bringing down the curtain on a legendary playing career, former national team captain Mary-Anne Musonda is stepping back into the dugout.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has officially appointed the 34-year-old as the new team manager of the Zimbabwe Senior Women’s National Team.

The move marks a seamless transition for the former skipper, who recently announced her retirement from all forms of cricket after nearly two decades of service.

Her appointment is being hailed as a major coup for the national set-up, bringing a wealth of elite-level experience, professionalism, and proven leadership to the squad.

Confirming the appointment, ZC managing director Givemore Makoni expressed immense confidence in Musonda’s ability to guide the team from the management side.

“Mary-Anne has been an outstanding servant of Zimbabwe Cricket whose leadership, discipline and passion for the women’s game have always stood out,” he said.

“She brings invaluable experience from her years as an international cricketer and captain, and we believe her presence within the team environment will greatly contribute to our efforts to rebuild a strong and competitive women’s side.”

Makoni further emphasised that Musonda’s new role aligns with a broader, long-term strategy by ZC to empower women in the sport.

“Her appointment is also part of our broader vision to continue growing women’s cricket in Zimbabwe by ensuring that former players with strong leadership qualities remain actively involved in the development of the game.”

Musonda’s journey is intricately woven into the very fabric of women’s cricket in Zimbabwe.

Having entered the national set-up in 2006 — long before Zimbabwe Women gained official international status — she has witnessed and driven the evolution of the sport in the country. Before Zimbabwe achieved official international status, Musonda had already built a rich body of experience, racking up over 100 appearances in national colours while grinding through regional qualifiers and bilateral series during the formative years of the program.

Once official status was secured, her statistical impact was undeniable. As a dependable right-handed middle-order batter, she featured in 16 Women’s One-Day Internationals (ODIs), scoring one century and one half-century.

She also played 58 Women’s T20 Internationals (T20Is), registering five half-centuries. Her crowning achievement came in October 2021 during Zimbabwe’s inaugural official ODI.

Leading from the front on her debut, Musonda smashed a magnificent, unbeaten 103 against Ireland Women at the Harare Sports Club, steering her side to a historic four-wicket victory and becoming the first Zimbabwean woman to score an international century.

Musonda’s final appearance in national colours came during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Abu Dhabi.

After initially being sidelined by an injury, she ultimately made the decision to step away from the crease to focus on the next phase of her life.

Beyond her prowess with the bat, Musonda stands out as a holistic role model for aspiring athletes across Africa.

She holds a Master’s degree in Development Finance from the University of Cape Town, embodying the perfect balance between academic excellence and elite sporting achievement.
