HARARE, Jul. 15 (NewsDay Live) – Herentals FC coach Paul Benza says his side remains on course to achieve its primary objective of securing a top-eight finish in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, despite a recent loss of momentum that has derailed its title challenge.

The Students have managed just eight points from their last seven matches, slipping from the top of a tightly contested title race before the mid-season break to sixth place on 36 points, 13 behind leaders Scottland FC.

Herentals had emerged as surprise championship contenders after Matchday 15, when they were level on 28 points with CAPS United, Hardrock FC and Scottland, separated only by goal difference.

However, Benza insists the club has not lost sight of its pre-season ambitions.

“I’m happy because our target was to finish the season in a better position or in the top eight,” Benza said.

“Having promoted six players from a lower division into this side and still being in the top eight is very positive for us, and we are very happy.”

Benza said the team’s performances this season have exceeded expectations, particularly given the successful integration of six players from the lower divisions into the first team.

He also believes the gap to the teams above them is still recoverable.

“We know we are not drastically behind the second-placed or even the first-placed team, so it shows the boys are doing very well,” he said.

“Generally, the whole team is motivated, even the executives are motivated.”

While Herentals’ recent run has dented their title aspirations, Benza maintains the club’s focus remains on consolidating its place in the top half of the table and continuing its long-term development rather than becoming consumed by the championship race.
