MANICA DIAMONDS FC are showing signs of revival under new president Evans Kamombo, whose leadership has restored confidence among supporters and attracted renewed interest from potential sponsors.
The club had plunged into turmoil after Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) abruptly ended its sponsorship of the Premier Soccer League side earlier this season.
The withdrawal of funding triggered financial strain at the club, leaving players demanding unpaid signing-on fees and bonuses and contributing to a poor start to the campaign that saw the Mutare-based outfit rooted at the bottom of the standings.
Formed in 2017, Manica Diamonds joined the Eastern Region Division One league in 2018 and earned promotion to the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League after an impressive unbeaten campaign.
However, ZCDC’s decision to pull out caught many by surprise and plunged the club into uncertainty. Players threatened to boycott matches over outstanding payments, while the team arrived late for some fixtures amid the turmoil.
Kamombo, who had been observing developments from the sidelines, stepped in as club president and immediately began engaging potential sponsors.

Since his arrival, the Gem Boys have played five matches, recording two wins, two draws and one defeat — a run that has lifted them to 15th place after 13 games.
Kamombo said the province should rally behind the club as it remains Manicaland’s only representative in the top flight.
“Manica Diamonds is the Premiership side in Manicaland, and I could not stop supporting President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind,” he said.
“Our President recently launched the Munhumutapa Cup in support of sport, as it also brings people together,” Kamombo added.
“I am urging other stakeholders to come on board and support this team in Manicaland; the players are willing to die for this province.”
Following the team’s improved performances, fans have begun returning to Sakubva Stadium to support their beloved side. The Gem Boys will host Highlanders FC at Sakubva Stadium on Sunday.
