THE Mutare City Council, in collaboration with the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy, is set to host the highly-anticipated Pride of Mutare International Boxing Tournament.
This event promises to be a thrilling showcase of regional boxing talent and a significant boost for sports development in Zimbabwe.
The tournament will feature 17 bouts, bringing together some of the finest boxers from across Southern Africa. Competitors hail from Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania, transforming the event into an international spectacle that underscores Mutare’s emerging status as a hub for sporting excellence.
At a Press conference at Mutare City Council chambers yesterday, Nicola Chiunya, marketing and media manager for the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy, emphasised the broader significance of the tournament.
“This is more than just a boxing event; it is a celebration of talent, discipline, and sport’s ability to unite nations. It provides an invaluable platform for young boxers to showcase their skills on an international stage, gain exposure, and pursue their dreams,” she said.
Chiunya highlighted that the tournament aligns with the academy’s vision of uplifting boxing in Zimbabwe and fostering regional cooperation.

“Through initiatives like these, we are building pathways for future champions,” she added.
Her remarks reflect a strategic effort by the academy to develop local talent while positioning Mutare as an emerging sporting destination.
Chiunya also praised local efforts and community support that have paved the way for this milestone event.
“Our sponsors and partners have shown incredible commitment; their support is not only advancing boxing but also positively impacting communities,” she remarked.
The partnership with Mutare City Council has been instrumental in turning this vision into reality.
Blessing Chafesuka, Mutare town clerk, expressed optimism about hosting such a high-profile event.
“As a city, we are proud to host this important tournament. All roads lead to Mutare this May. We invite everyone across Zimbabwe to witness what promises to be a memorable event,” he said.
Chafesuka also outlined ambitious plans for the future of boxing in Mutare.
He announced that following this tournament, the city would establish its own internationally recognised boxing ring and develop a roster of local fighters ready to compete on global platforms.
“While we are hosting international competitors now, within three to four years, we aim to send our boxers abroad — whether to South Africa or even America — creating opportunities for our athletes to shine worldwide,” Chafesuka declared.
