MUTARE, May 5 (NewsDay Live) — Manica Diamonds president Evans Kamombo has welcomed the return of Castle Lager Premier Soccer League action to Sakubva Stadium, describing the development as a major relief for the Mutare-based outfit.

Kamombo said the move aligns with Emmerson Mnangagwa’s “leaving no one and no place behind” mantra, after the team endured a costly period playing home matches outside Manicaland.

The Gem Boys had been forced to host fixtures at Gibbo Stadium in Triangle and later at Green Fuel Arena in Chisumbanje — a situation Kamombo said placed significant financial strain on the club.

“It was senseless for us to play our home matches in Triangle,” Kamombo told NewsDay Live on Tuesday. “We had to fight to bring Premiership football back to Manicaland. We could not risk destabilising the team.”

He added that the return to Sakubva Stadium restores identity and support for the province’s sole top-flight side.

“Manica Diamonds is the only Premiership team in Manicaland. Playing at Sakubva ensures we are not leaving anyone or any place behind. This resonates with the President’s vision,” he said.

Kamombo also noted Mnangagwa’s interest in football, citing the recent launch of the Munhumutapa tournament as part of broader efforts to promote the sport.

Sakubva Stadium was recently homologated, paving the way for the return of top-flight football to Mutare.

Manica Diamonds will host Premiership newcomers Agama FC in a Match Day 11 fixture at Sakubva on Saturday.
