THE capital’s boxing fever peaked yesterday as United Kingdom-based Zimbabwean pugilist Joseph “Smoking Joe” Maphosa touched down at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, ahead of the highly anticipated Independence Boxing Bonanza.

The event, scheduled for this Saturday night at the City Sports Centre, comes a week before Zimbabwe’s 46th Independence anniversary celebrations and features a stacked card of international and local talent.

Maphosa, a 32-year-old flyweight star with an impressive professional record of 15-1-1, is set to face Malawian veteran Aubrey Masamba in an Intercontinental Flyweight bout. Despite being based in the UK, Maphosa’s return to his roots has been met with significant fanfare.

Speaking shortly after his arrival, Maphosa promised a masterclass in the ring, emphasising that this fight is more than just personal glory.

"It feels amazing to be back here. I am ready to fight for my people. I am ready to put on a great show. I want to thank President Emmerson Mnangagwa for this opportunity, as well as myself and all the young people who will be competing in the Independence Boxing Bonanza,” he said.

“I want to thank my manager, Clyde Musonda, for making it all happen, and thank you to Charles Manyuchi as well. At the same time, we will be fighting drug and substance abuse in the country. This is a great cause, and I can't wait to put on a great show.”

The tournament is hosted by Delta Force Boxing and MMA Academy. Its director, Clyde Musonda, who also manages Maphosa, provided an update on the final preparations. He highlighted the logistical success of the event, noting that the arrival of international fighters from countries such as the DR Congo, Namibia, and Malawi ensures a high standard of competition.

“We are excited to welcome Smoking Joe and all the other boxers who are coming in for this important tournament. On behalf of my organising committee, I can safely say it's all going according to plan. We are looking forward to a memorable event as we celebrate the country's Independence as well as use boxing to fight drug substance abuse,” he said.

While the Maphosa-Masamba clash is a major draw, the night features several high-stakes matches.

The main event features Zvikomborero Chamhere and Marlon Chivero, who are gunning for the National Super-Featherweight title.

In the main supporting bout, Kudakwashe “Take Money” Chiwandire looks to revive her career against Patience Masitara for the Women’s National Featherweight title.

International representation is also strong, with fighters such as Chris Joshua Kazadi of the DRC and Gabriel Shimweefelen of Namibia set to compete. The presence of a top referee and judge from France further underscores the international prestige Delta Force has brought to this year’s Independence celebrations. With the weigh-in scheduled for tomorrow, the stage is officially set for a historic night of leather and lightning at the City Sports Centre.
