THE newly rebranded MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) has announced that its long-awaited season will kick off on March 28.

The season’s start was previously delayed due to a reported communication breakdown between the regional board and the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa).

Although neither side has disclosed how the dispute was resolved, announcing a start date signals a clear breakthrough

At a Press conference held over the weekend, league chairperson Sweeney Mushonga (pictured) confirmed that the wait is over.

“The meeting resolved that the games will kick off the week of March 28. The fans have been waiting for this,”he said.

Mushonga noted that the delay, rather than being purely disruptive, gave teams valuable time to prepare.

"This three-week delay gave teams a moment to fine-tune their squads. Friendly matches became the bedrock of their preparations,” he said.

“We had the opportunity to watch some of these matches and saw a lot of excitement and high levels of competition. Many teams have bolstered their rosters, so we expect a very competitive season ahead."

The NRSL board also warned that the upcoming schedule will be demanding.

Zifa has introduced the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, a high-stakes competition featuring top teams and offering a US$1 million winner’s prize.

“We are excited to report that in addition to league games, we will have the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup,” Mushonga said. “It is a blockbuster tournament with a US$1 million winner’s prize. Our teams are ready to compete for that kind of life-changing money.”

The board has already conducted the draw for the tournament, with fixtures scheduled for the Independence Day holiday.

This season, Northern Region teams will compete on three fronts: the league title, the Super 8 Cup and the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup.
