ZIMBABWE Under-19 captain Simbarashe Mudzengerere has called for improved batting performances after the hosts qualified for the Super Six stage of the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Zimbabwe are at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo this morning for a daunting clash against 2023 World Cup runners-up India.

Despite sealing qualification, Mudzengerere admitted the team’s struggles with the bat remain a concern.

"We're happy to have made it to the next round, but we know we need to work on our batting,” he said.

"We struggled to put up a big score and it cost us in the end. We need to improve our batting if we want to do well in the next round."

Zimbabwe’s two points, earned despite a defeat to Pakistan, were enough to secure a place in the next round.

“Now we need to focus on improving our batting and taking it to the next level.”

Head coach Elton Chigumbura echoed his captain’s sentiments, highlighting the need for consistency.

"We've shown glances of brilliance, but we need to put it all together," Chigumbura told NewsDay Sport.

"The boys are working hard and we're looking forward to the match against India."

The Zimbabwe team was mobbed by fans and friends after the match, celebrating their progression to the Super Six stage.

“Good result for the tournament, having the hosts still in," Mudzengerere said with a smile.

“We're looking forward to the next round and giving it our all.”

With strong home support and renewed confidence, Zimbabwe are hopeful of rising to the challenge against top opposition.

Qualification has sparked excitement across the country, with fans dreaming of a deep run in the tournament.

“We're just taking it one game at a time, but we're excited to be part of this,” Mudzengerere said.

“We are looking to make the most of the opportunity and make the country proud.”
