WHAWHA recorded their third victory of the season with a narrow win over Hwange in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match played at Ascot Stadium in Gweru yesterday.

A solitary strike in the second half by Kenneth Bhuka was all the prison wardens needed to collect maximum points.

The hosts came into the match desperate for maximum points having only won against champions Dynamos and FC Platinum.

After the match, winning coach Lloyd Mutasa was happy with maximum points highlighting the need to start picking points on the road.

“We are coming from three consecutive defeats and winning at home gives us confidence going forward and I am also happy with the performance of the players. We now need to start picking points away from home. Our only point away from home was a draw against Flame Lily and we need to improve on that,” said Mutasa.

Hwange coach Nation Dube blamed the officiating for the loss, pointing fingers at matchday official Munyaradzi Majoni.

“We lost because of bad officiating. The centre man made a lot of mistakes, but his assistants did a good a job,” said Dube.

The hosts came close to changing the scoreboard midway through the opening half, but Oscar Lungu’s effort was saved by an alert Timothy Sibanda in goal for Hwange.

Moments later, Roy Useni got another glorious chance, but he blasted his effort wide. Mutasa’s pep time talk shifted the balance of power in favour of the prison wardens, and they were rewarded with a goal as early as the second minute after the breather.

Bhuka raced clear before firing past an exposed Sibanda.
