SECESSIONIST party Mthwakazi Liberation Front (MLF) has distanced itself from other political parties from Matabeleland region which have reportedly formed a coalition and pledged to jointly rally behind MDC leader Welshman Ncube as presidential candidate in next year’s harmonised elections.

In a statement yesterday, MLF spokesperson Isaiah Magagula said his party had not entered into an alliance with any political, civic or non-governmental organisation in the region.
“MLF has nothing, and will have nothing to do with Zimbabwe, let alone elections that serve no purpose. All MLF wants from Zimbabwe is Mthwakazi independence,” he said.
“As MLF, we believe Mthwakazi independence will not be achieved through elections. We have said it before and we repeat, MLF will use and exhaust all peaceful means possible to gain our independence, excluding engaging in elections.”
Last week, secretary-general of the Mthwakazi Youth Joint Resolution, Thandolwenkosi Dube, said eight parties and civic society groups had formed a united political front, Alliance Khumbul’ Ekhaya (AKE), to collectively mobilise resources for candidates ahead of harmonised elections expected early next year.

Dube cited the Patriotic Union of Matabeleland, Mthwakazi National Party, Matabeleland Liberation Organisation, Mthwakazi Liberation Front, UMhlahlo Wesizwe SikaMthwakazi, the Zimbabwe Unemployed People’s Union, Isijula Trust and Zapu-FP, as members of the coalition.
“While MLF supports Mthwakazi unity efforts being made, we know for certain that elections will not lead to our independence,” Magagula said.
“MLF hopes that those involved in AKE consider working together with MDC as MDC is a formidable force to reckon with and cannot be ignored if proper analysis of those Mthwakazians interested in elections is anything to go by.”
