Marigold Children Zimbabwe, an organisation founded by Donnet Kruger, has applied for land from Chiredzi Town Council for the establishment of a $1 million school for the disabled.

Kruger confirmed the development, saying the school, which will be the first of its kind in Zimbabwe, will empower parents and legally-appointed guardians, who are responsible for their disabled and dependent children.

The empowerment programmes will be in the form of life skills.

Chiredzi is believed to have more than 700 disabled children.

The $1m project will include a school, hospital with state-of-the art disability machines and accommodation, making it the first to cater for the parents of the disabled in Zimbabwe.

“We are going to build a facility, which will have a school, hospital and accommodation.

“We will target parents of the disabled, train mothers or those who care for the disabled on how to cater for the disabled. “They will be taught on how to handle their disabled children.

“We came up with the idea after realising that there are about 700 disabled people in Chiredzi district most of whom live in squalid conditions and their parents need training on how to take care of them.

“We have drawn up a $1 million budget and many organisations from local and abroad are waiting to fund us as soon as we get land and all our papers are approved,” Kruger said.

She said they were working with Elizabeth Zinyora and Tendai Nyasha Jeriman, who have a disabled child and are trustees in Marigold Children Zimbabwe.

Kruger, who is a writer said she was touched by the plight of the disabled when she visited Chiredzi to attend to unrelated other business last year. — Mirror
