ZVISHAVANE Town Council last week gave illegal vendors until yesterday to vacate the central business district (CBD) failure of which they would be forcibly evicted from the streets.

Council secretary Tinoda Mukutu said the deadline had been agreed upon and they expected vendors to comply. “The deadline to vacate the CBD is today (Thursday),” he said.
“We expect all vendors to comply because they have designated vending bays and the deadline was agreed upon.” The vendors have been selling their wares in the CBD arguing they had no choice, but to be near customers to boost their income.
In the past, vendors in the mining town complained that the municipal police used brute force when evicting them.
There have also been complaints that most of the market stalls were shoddily assembled and could collapse any time.

Last year, nine vendors were injured when a market stall in the high-density suburb of Mandava collapsed.
The injured vendors were hit by fragments of asbestos which fell from the roof of the stall.
Recently the local authority said it was in the process of constructing new vending bays at Makarios Flea Market.
