SIX people, including a minor, were yesterday killed, while three others were injured after a commuter omnibus was involved in a head-on collision with a light vehicle at the 58km peg along the Gweru-Masvingo road.

Confirming the accident, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the accident, which occurred near Chachacha business centre in Shurugwi, was unfortunate because indications are that the driver of the light vehicle, a Honda Jazz, could have been speeding, according to witnesses.
“The Honda Jazz, with South African registration numbers, collided with a Gweru-bound commuter omnibus when it encroached into the lane of the Hiace,” Nyathi said.
“Two passengers from the Hiace died on the spot as well as three others from the smaller vehicle. A minor later died at Gweru Provincial Hospital. Three people were injured and two are admitted at Shurugwi District Hospital, while the other one is at Gweru Hospital.”
Although investigations are underway to establish the facts of the accident, there are reports that the driver of the Honda Jazz had earlier on been warned against speeding, he said.

“We once again implore drivers to exercise caution and follow road regulations. As police, we always issue statements warning drivers. These must be observed at all times,” Nyathi said.
