About 60 people on Monday marched to the parliament building in South Africa protesting against the way immigrants, including Zimbabweans, are treated in that country.
The march was held at a time when thousands of Zimbabweans have been deported in the past few months following the lifting of the moratorium on deportations by South Africa’s Home Affairs Department.
Langton Mariyoga, the spokesperson for People Against Suffering, Oppression and Poverty (Passop) told NewsDay the march was in commemoration of International Migrants Day, the previous Sunday.
“The march was a success as more than 60 people participated,” Miriyoga said.
“Our aim is to see immigrants’ rights and the rights of refugees and asylum seekers being protected. “We are concerned by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs’ decision to start deporting Zimbabwean and other nationals living in South Africa.
“The march was called to protest against the way the government is handling immigrants’ rights.”
