The festive season road death toll yesterday rose to 84 after two more people died in traffic accidents across the country.
The festive season began on December 15 and according to police statistics, 706 people were injured in 956 accidents recorded nationwide.
National Traffic police spokesperson Superintendent Jessie Banda yesterday confirmed the figures, adding Mashonaland East had recorded the highest number of fatalities.
“Eighty-four people have died so far across the country and we have impounded 1 994 unroadworthy vehicles,” said Banda. Police attributed most of the accidents to drunken driving, speeding and fatigue.
Last year, 98 people were killed while 1 090 others were injured in 1 119 accidents recorded over the same period.
