A 28-year-old Penhalonga man was jailed for five years for attempted rape after waylaying a woman coming from church last year.

Brian Ferendende was convicted on his own plea by magistrate Fabian Feshete on a charge of attempted rape.

He was sentenced to five years behind bars. One year was suspended on condition he would not be convicted of a similar offence in the next five years.

Charges against Ferendende are that sometime in March last year he waylaid a 43-year-old woman on a Sunday afternoon.

The court heard the old woman screamed for help from passers-by thwarting Ferendende’s intent. Jane-Rose Matsikidze prosecuted.
