At least 129 people were killed on the countrys roads during the festive period from 102 traffic accidents recorded, police said yesterday.
As the fight to bring sanity on the roads escalated, 2 910 vehicles were impounded owing to a number of reasons including unroadworthiness and lack of proper documentation.
National traffic police spokesperson Tigere Chigome yesterday said: We impounded 2 910 vehicles from 15 December up to 10 January. We also issued 143 478 tickets to drivers who were found on the wrong side of the law.
Chigome said last year they had recorded 1 528 accidents, 101 were fatal leaving 126 people dead and 1 161 injured.
He said the operation is continuing as their aim was to ensure drivers adhered to road rules.
It was not all about the festive season. We are not going to scale down on checking if people have the requisite papers. We are going to be on the roads all the time until we have sanity.

We shall arrest all errant drivers until they have all requisite papers and also seen that their vehicles are fit for public use, he said.
