The government is yet to approve proposed programmes at the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe University (RCU), three months after the institution was legally registered, the institution’s acting vice-chancellor Wiseman Magwa said yesterday.
RCU is located at Morgenster Mission, some 30km out of Masvingo town.
The university is located at a site where its predecessor, the Great Zimbabwe University, was housed before it was closed and stripped of its name by the government.
“We have been accepted by government as a registered university with its own charter. What we are now waiting for is the approval from the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education,” Magwa told NewsDay.
He, however, expressed optimism the institution would open soon after senior Higher Education ministry officials toured the university recently.
“Some officials from the ministry came and toured our premises and assessed our facilities. They also looked at the degree programmes to be offered in three faculties.

“As a law-complying institution, we are awaiting for their approval,” Magwa said.
He said all necessary renovations to meet university requirements had been done.
“All the upgrading has been done and we hope if our programmes are approved, we will open the varsity before June,” he said.
The RCZ first opened Great Zimbabwe University, but it was forcibly closed by the government and its name was adopted by the then Masvingo State University.
