MUTARE — A 17-year-old boy from this eastern border city appeared in court yesterday facing a $20 000 theft charge.
The court heard that the alleged theft took place at a city night joint, Mutare Manica Motoring Club, over the weekend.
The teenager (name withheld) was not asked to plead to the charge when he appeared before Mutare magistrate Anniah Ndiraya.
He was remanded in custody to March 27. The State alleges that on March 10, the teenager and his two alleged accomplices, who are still at large, tracked down a Mutare businessman, David Munowenyu, whom they had spotted carrying cash to the beer joint.
It is alleged Munowenyu had just sold his car in Harare and had $20 000 cash on him.
Soon after he entered the building, the suspects allegedly entered the parking lot and broke into Munowenyu’s Mercedes Benz vehicle by smashing the windscreen.

They allegedly stole a wallet which was stashed between the seats containing the $20 000 and sped off in a hired taxi.
The trio later allegedly shared the loot with the teenager getting the lion’s share of $10 000.
Soon after sharing the spoils, the teenager allegedly hired another taxi to Harare.
Munowenyu later discovered the break-in and theft and reported the matter to the police.
Acting on a tip-off, police detectives tracked the hired taxi and arrested the suspect, recovering $6 893 from him and $230 from the taxi driver, identified as Joseph Garwe.
