VICTORIA FALLS — A Zambian national, who was arrested at Matetsi area when he was found in possession of an AK 47 rifle, was on Friday remanded in custody.

Mubita Muyuba (37) pleaded not guilty to illegal possession of a dangerous firearm when he appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Sharon Rosemani who remanded him to March 27 for trial.

The court heard that between February 2 and 4 this year, Muyuba, in the company of one Eric Muyombo, Chavunda Muyombo, one man identified only as Justine and many others who were not named, entered Zimbabwe from Zambia through an illegal entry point along the Zambezi River to the west of Matetsi Game Lodge in Kazungula area. They were armed with an AK 47 and a 375 rifle.

On an unknown date, they further crossed into Botswana armed with their rifles on an unknown mission.

On February 4 they clashed with the Botswana security forces who shot Justine and the rest of them escaped into Zimbabwe.

The AK 47 rifle was recovered by Zimbabwean police while the 375 rifle was not recovered.
