Thirteen people were killed while four others were injured when an overloaded commuter omnibus travelling along the Mbembesi-Fort Rixon road veered off the road and crashed into Nonka River on Monday evening.

The accident happened hardly a day after another commuter omnibus travelling along the Wedza-Chitungwiza road killed six people — four on the spot and two on admission at Chitungwiza Hospital — when it burst its left rear tyre, veered off the road and rolled twice before landing on its roof.

Officer Commanding National Traffic Senior Assistant Commissioner Martin Chari yesterday said the commuter omnibus was overloaded and was speeding resulting in the driver failing to negotiate a narrow bridge hitting its embankment 9km off the Gweru-Bulawayo road. As a result of the increasing number of accidents involving commuter omnibuses, Chari said police would intensify their blitz against kombi drivers countrywide.
