A Tanzanian woman who was nabbed at Harare International Airport and charged with dealing in dangerous drugs after being found in possession of 6,9kg of heroin has been slapped with a 15-year jail term.

The woman Fatima Musa Saguti was convicted yesterday by Harare provincial magistrate Tendai Mahwe for trying to smuggle the contraband worth $207 000 out of the country.

Saguti was arrested on June 27 this year at around 11am when she intended to board a Kenyan Airways plane destined for Ghana.

Prosecutor Memory Mukapa presented that on June 27 this year Saguti arrived at Harare International Airport and went to the check-in point.

The court heard that when Saguti surrendered her grey suitcase for scanning, airport security officials discovered that it contained a suspicious substance and called police detectives for verification.

Saguti was then whisked away by the detectives and a physical check was carried out on her person and the suitcase, leading to the recovery of four plastic sachets.

The court heard that the sachets were stashed into an improvised hidden compartment within the suitcase.

Upon opening the sachets, the court heard, it was discovered that they contained some creamy substance and were wrapped in khaki tape.

Saguti was then arrested and confirmed that she intended to deliver the drugs in Ghana.
