Each lucky patron received an orange envelope full of male and female condoms.

The free condom package was part of the Sexual Rights Centre’s bar tour for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

A spokesperson for the Sexual Rights Centre Mojalifa Mokoele said sex workers decided to take the bar tour distributing packages of condoms to dispel the misconception that sex workers were spreading HIV and Aids.

“There is a serious perception that sex workers are spreading HIV, therefore, to clarify the matter, sex workers decided to take on a bar tour. They were distributing packages full of condoms and sex workers rights information,” he said.

Each envelope contained male and female condoms.

“Sex workers in Bulawayo are setting the pace and taking the lead in campaigning for safe sex and also empowering other women to use the female condom,” he said

In each bar, the team of commercial sex workers danced to a campaign song against the discrimination of commercial sex workers as they distributed the condoms.

Mokoele said the campaign song and condoms had been well-received by night revellers in downtown bars.

“It was interesting to note that in upmarket bars there was more reluctance to dialogue on safe sex and receiving condoms,” he said.
