BANKET — A 32-year-old prison officer stationed at Karoi Prison died on Tuesday when his Toyota Corsa vehicle collided head-on with a Nissan Hardbody vehicle that was overtaking a convoy of heavy trucks at the 63km-peg along the Harare-Chirundu road. Report by Own Correspondent

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara identified the deceased as Simbarashe Guvamombe employed by the Zimbabwe Prison Service.

Police said on the fateful day at around 5:30pm, an Airforce of Zimbabwe vehicle, travelling towards Harare with 15 passengers on board, tried to overtake slow-moving haulage trucks at a curve and encroached into the lane of an on-coming ZPS-owned Toyota Corsa from the opposite direction being driven by the now deceased.

The Toyota Corsa had two passengers on board.

“The cars collided resulting in the injury of 10 people including Guvamombe who later died on admission at Banket Hospital,” said Mabgweazara, adding that the other injured people were reportedly in a stable condition.

Mabgweazara urged motorist to observe road rules and regulations to avoid unnecessary road carnage.
