A BINGA woman on Wednesday was killed by elephants while harvesting crops at her field, police confirmed yesterday.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube said the incident happened in the morning. Dube identified the deceased as Mchimba Mudenda (69) from Nalubuyu village under Chief Hwange in Binga.
He said on the fateful day, Mudenda left her home in the morning for the fields, leaving behind her 13-year-old granddaughter Evidence Munsaka.
“After realising that her grandmother had not yet returned from the fields as usual, Evidence then followed her,” Dube said.
“She found her grandmother dead, her body covered by tree branches and some elephant marks at the scene. We suspect that she might have been killed by the elephants.”

He said some elephants were spotted in the nearby fields when the deceased’s granddaughter arrived at the scene.
Evidence immediately informed other villagers about the incident and a report was made at the Binga Police Station.
Police said they were not suspecting any foul play.
