FORMER secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Union of Democrats (ZUD) Isaac Manyemba has bounced back into the political limelight following his recent nomination as the MDC-T’s mayor-elect for Chitungwiza.

MDC-T national spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora yesterday confirmed Manyemba’s nomination, adding the former ZUD official joined the MDC-T in 2000 and is the party’s provincial deputy spokesperson for Chitungwiza.
“Isaac Manyemba is the one who has been nominated for the post of mayor in Chitungwiza and Obert Gutu will be mayor for Harare, while the rest of the mayoral appointments in other cities are likely to be announced by the party leadership before the end of the week,” Mwonzora said.
“Thomas Muzuva has also been nominated for the post of deputy mayor for Harare. The president of the party (Morgan Tsvangirai) has done the appointments after making consultations in the party.”
Manyemba, who will be deputised by Phillip Mutodi, automatically becomes deputy chairperson of the Harare Metropolitan Provincial Council which will be chaired by Gutu.

Other contenders for the Chitungwiza mayoral post included MDC-T provincial executive member Fortune Mangwiro and former Housing minister Fidelis Mhashu.
ZUD was founded by Margaret Dongo in 1998 following her fallout with Zanu PF in 1995. ZUD has not been active since then.
