A 30-YEAR-OLD Harare woman was on Wednesday slapped with a five-year jail term after she was convicted of possessing 47kg of dagga in Chipinge recently.

Starkia Chivenga (30) of Warren Park in the capital was convicted on her own plea of guilty when she appeared before Chipinge magistrate Vusimusi Gapara.

One year of the sentence was suspended on condition that she would not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Charges against Chivenga were that on April 20 this year, police manning a roadblock along the Ngundu-Tanganda Road stopped a commuter omnibus travelling along the way.

According to the State, the omnibus arrived at a roadblock at Chisumbanje Experimental Station at around 3pm and police conducted a search.

They came across three bags loaded with the dagga and Chivenga confessed to possessing the dagga. She was subsequently arrested.

The State, represented by Witness Nyamundaya, submitted that Chivenga had no right dealing in the prohibited drug.

She was also advised that the 47kg of dagga would be destroyed by the State.
