THE Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ has named five companies that won local commercial radio licences to broadcast in eight selected urban centres following interviews conducted last year.

These are AB Communications which won two licences (Gogogoi FM and Faya FM in Masvingo and Gweru respectively), Kingstons (Nyaminyami FM and KE100.4 FM in Kariba and Harare respectively), Fairtalk Communications (Skyz Metro FM and Breeze FM in Bulawayo and Victoria Falls), Zimpapers (Diamond FM in Mutare) and Ray of Hope trading as YA FM in Zvishavane.
Information Communication Technology and Courier Service minister Supa Mandiwanzira is a major shareholder at AB Communications which also owns ZiFM while Zimpapers also runs another commercial radio, Star FM.
In a statement last night, BAZ said the winners had been selected based on the strength of their proposals.
Twelve companies had submitted applications to broadcast.

“This determination by the authority was guided by the proposal submitted by each applicant for a particular licence area, the outcome of the public inquiries and the guidance provided in terms of the objectives of the Broadcasting Services Act,” BAZ said.
Tafataona Mahoso is BAZ chairman as well as chief executive officer of the Zimbabwe Media Commission.
