The power utility is owed close to $1 billion by corporate organisations including government departments and local authorities.

In a notice sent to customers, ZETDC managing director Julian Chinembiri said customers should approach sales managers to make payment arrangements.

“The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission & Distribution Company (ZETDC) would like to inform its valued customers who are in arrears to settle their accounts,” Chinembiri said.

“Credit control measures have been stepped up to recover all outstanding debts. Customers that need payment arrangements should contact their respective sales managers.

“Customers are being urged to co-operate in order for ZETDC to fulfil its mandate to deliver service effectively and efficiently.

“The arrears settlement will enable the smooth implementation of power supply expansion projects at both Kariba and Hwange power stations in order to boost generation and reduce load-shedding.”

According to the power utility, mining companies and industry owe $244 million, domestic users ($299 million) and farmers ($75 million).

Zesa has, however, been able to recover some of the debts through the prepaid electricity meter system as a certain percentage is deducted from power purchases.
