The trial of Tendai Chipunza (32), Nyarai Chifamba (35) and Peter Nyangoni (36) had suffered several false starts as the State indicated that it was not yet ready.

Yesterday, the three were remanded in custody to September 10 for trial by magistrate Josephine Sunday.

The unrepresented suspects are also being accused of issuing fake vehicle registration books to motorists in Marondera and other parts of the country.

Their alleged accomplices, Tendekai Madongorere (40) and Gideon Taderera (42), will appear in a separate trial after they managed to secure the services of a lawyer. The suspects, who allegedly wore VID officers’ uniform, were arrested on August 1 in Harare by police detectives from Marondera.

Police allegedly recovered VID white shirts used in committing the crime, a cellphone line, five fake drivers’ licence discs and a number of driver’s licence photos.
