BULAWAYO, July 8 (NewsDay Live) - A 60-year-old Hurungwe man has been sentenced to 40 years in jail for raping his 14-year-old granddaughter on two occasions.
The court heard that the victim was left in the custody of her grandfather while her grandmother was away.
It is the State case that the offender exploited this trust and lured the young girl into his bedroom under the guise of asking for assistance, where he raped her and threatened her with eviction from the homestead if she spoke out.
A month later, the offender stalked the victim outside the homestead where she was fetching water and gathering vegetables and raped her a second time.
The victim confided in social welfare workers, triggering investigations that led to the perpetrator's arrest.
