HARARE, June 18 (NewsDay Live) - The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) has pledged funeral and insurance compensation benefits for victims of the bus-train collision that claimed nine lives and left 25 others critically injured in Chiredzi on Tuesday.
The accident occurred when a Makuku bus failed to stop at a rail level crossing, resulting in a fatal collision with a goods train.
“ICZ will be providing assistance to the victims of the accident. To facilitate timely support, ICZ will assist through payment of funeral and medical expenses for the deceased and injured victims in line with insurance compensation limits of the Road Traffic Act,” said ICZ chairman James Mharadze.
He said the assistance, given under ICZ's corporate social responsibility programme, will be channelled through the Civil Protection Unit.
The accident has been declared a national disaster by the government.
