New “Donate”, “Request Payment” and “Tips” features on the EcoCash Super App are gaining traction, signalling a shift from a pure payments tool to a more social, engagement-driven platform.

Developed by Sasai Fintech, a subsidiary of Cassava Technologies, the app is evolving into an integrated digital ecosystem that blends chat, content creation and financial transactions.

“We’re seeing a shift in how people use digital payments — it’s inherently social,” an EcoCash spokesperson said. “It’s not just about sending money, but about interaction between sender and recipient.”

The Donate function, housed under the Explore tab, allows users to solicit voluntary contributions from their networks — for charitable causes, community initiatives or personal needs — reinforcing mobile money’s role in community support systems.

The Request Payment feature enables users to ask for specific amounts directly from contacts, streamlining everyday transactions such as settling shared expenses or meeting urgent costs. Transfers are executed instantly between EcoCash wallets.

Meanwhile, the Tips feature introduces a content-sharing layer, allowing users to post and exchange practical advice — from DIY solutions and everyday hacks to motivational and faith-based content — within the app.

EcoCash says the additions are designed to mirror how financial activity already flows through social networks, particularly within Zimbabwe’s informal sector.

“These features tap into existing social and economic relationships, which are central to financial inclusion in this market,” the spokesperson said.
