A 28-year-old man from Cowdray Park has been arrested in connection with unlawful possession of dangerous drugs following a dramatic police chase in Bulawayo.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele identified the suspect as Mbongeni Sibanda, who was arrested following a tip-off from members of the public.

Msebele said: “The information led officers to the intersection of George Silundika Street and 1st Avenue, where a parked vehicle had drawn suspicion as young men were seen approaching it repeatedly.”

She said police officers conducted surveillance to verify the suspected illegal activity before moving in to make an arrest.

“However, upon noticing the police presence, the suspect fled the scene at high speed, prompting a pursuit.

“Sibanda reportedly attempted to evade arrest by hiding at various locations but later returned to the same area, allegedly intending to continue his illicit trade.

“The pursuit came to an end after the suspect was involved in a road traffic accident, leading to his arrest,” she said.

“A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of dangerous substances, including Broncleer and Astrapain syrups, crystal meth, and equipment used for drug consumption,” Msebele added.

Inspector Msebele commended members of the public for their cooperation and urged continued support in reporting drug-related activities.

“We encourage members of the community to keep working with the police by providing information that helps us combat and eradicate drug abuse and trafficking,” she said.

The arrest highlights growing concern over drug-related activities in communities and the critical role played by public cooperation in combating crime.
