TANAKA Kungarangaza (21), was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma at the tender age of 13.

Her journey was not easy, but she credits the support she received from various quarters for her triumph over adversity.

“I was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma when I was 13 years old in 2018. I had nine cycles of chemotherapy,” she recalled.

“The journey was not easy, but I thank KidzCan. They supplied all my needs to conquer cancer. They provided me with expensive chemotherapy drugs at no cost.

"They paid for the CT scans which were out of reach for us. The several counselling sessions made me accept my condition at the same time encouraging me to build my fighting spirit.

“To talk of the amazing love, care and support makes me look back with gratitude. KidzCan is God-sent and goes the extra mile.”

The massive support Tanaka received was anchored on her pillar, her mother, Trish Kundiona.

Tanaka acknowledges the unwavering support of her family, particularly her mother, who stood by her throughout her ordeal.

“Were it not for my mother who never gave up, I would not be here. I thank her from the bottom of my heart.

“I also want to say a big thank you to my family for their unwavering support. They cheered me when the chemotherapy drugs seemed to overwhelm me.

“I would like to let my friends know that they are my friends throughout the life journey. They are my all-weather friends,” Tanaka said, her voice filled with emotion.

The staff at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals’ A4 Special Ward also played a significant role in Tanaka’s recovery.

She recalls the love, care and support she received from the doctors, nurses and other staff members.

“Last but not least, I extend my warmest regards to Parirenyatwa Hospital’s A4 Special Ward. Despite battling cancer in the ward, the doctors, nurses, all the staff made us all special, be it in the ward or the playroom. The attention paid, the patient-centred approach made me feel that I was being treated with love all the time.

“I am a childhood cancer survivor because of the love, treatment, care and support that I received from all. I conquered cancer because all the people I mentioned walked with me, held my hand, supported and lifted me up when weary.”

Kundiona shared her daughter’s journey, from noticing a swelling on her cheek to receiving a cancer diagnosis.

“At the age of 13, Tanaka started developing a swelling on the cheek and in no time, her eye was nearly shut,” she said.

“I took my daughter to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals’ oral dentist unit. She had an X-ray done and it showed that her gums and teeth were OK.

“They then did a biopsy (cut a small sample from the swelling). The biopsy showed that she had cancer. It was not easy to accept because we thought she had a dental problem. Tanaka was then referred to A4 Special Children’s ward. She missed school the whole of 2018.”

As a parent, Kundiona emphasised the importance of being observant of any changes in children.

“I urge all parents, especially mothers, to be observant of their children to notice any changes early,” she said.

“The parent is the first doctor to notice any changes. In case you notice a change, go to a clinic or hospital near you,” she said.

Today, Tanaka is doing well.

She has passed three O Level subjects and has taken a beauty therapy course.

She currently assists her mother’s friend at her shop.

Tanaka dreams of running her own clothing boutique.

“Tanaka said she wanted to use her hands rather than rewrite. She has taken a beauty therapy course in nails and hair. She currently assists my friend at her shop. Tanaka dreams of one day owning a table or shop.

“She is good with selling and is optimistic that one day, with support, she will be an entrepreneur in the clothing sector,” Kundiona said.

Haematologist and cancer expert Dr Gilta Guta said Burkitt Lymphoma is the fastest-growing tumour known to mankind as it doubles every 24 hours, adding that with early diagnosis and treatment, it is curable.

“Childhood blood cancers are a significant concern globally, with various types affecting young lives.

“Among these, Burkitt lymphoma stands out as a highly aggressive, yet potentially curable cancer,” Guta said.

“Characterised by its rapid growth and progression, Burkitt lymphoma requires prompt medical attention and timely treatment.”

Burkitt’s lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, particularly B lymphocytes found in the germinal centre. It is named after Denis Parsons Burkitt, the Irish surgeon who first described the disease in 1958 while working in equatorial Africa.

Tanaka’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and support.
